AXA ICAS Psychological Fitness for Work

AXA ICAS can provide a Psychological Fitness for Work assessment to form an integral part of the management of sickness absence within organisations.

The ultimate aim of the Psychological Fitness for Work assessment is to reach resolution in situations that have become 'stuck'. The intervention is most commonly used for reducing sickness absence and therefore reducing costs to the organisation through an earlier and successful rehabilitation of employees back to work. The programme can particularly help to support employees with a history of absence, long-term absence or complex absence.

Referral Process

  1. The organisational referrer will call the AXA ICAS FIRSTcall® Consultant to discuss the situation and determine whether a psychological Fitness for Work assessment is the appropriate way forward.
  2. The AXA ICAS Consultant and organisational referrer will agree the specific objectives to be considered in the assessment.
  3. The AXA ICAS Consultant will ensure that the organisation referrer has all the information required to make a referral i.e. letter to employee, consent form.
  4. The organisational referrer will liase with the employee, in order to explain the process and gain the employee's consent to proceed.
  5. The organisational referrer will fax/send completed consent form and other supporting briefing papers, e.g. GP letter, medical reports.
  6. The AXA ICAS Consultant will brief the AXA ICAS Clinical Psychologist with all the relevant information.
  7. The AXA ICAS Psychologist will contact the employee to arrange the Psychological Fitness for Work assessment.
  8. The AXA ICAS Consultant will inform the organisational referrer when the assessment is due to take place.

The Psychological Fitness for Work Assessment

  1. The assessment session will take place at the Psychologist's office and will last approximately two hours.
  2. The assessment is a structured session during which the employee may be asked to complete a number of psychological tests (psychometrics) and participate in a structured interview with the Psychologist. The employee may be asked a range of questions relating to the current issues and treatment, as well as relevant personal, family and employment history. The focus of the interview will be to assess the implications of all the above for the employee's ability to function at work or return to work.
  3. The psychologist will complete a report providing a professional opinion and recommendations with regard to the employees work situation. Advice may be given on future treatment.
  4. The employee will be invited to a follow up session approximately 1 week later. The psychologist will discuss with the employee the conclusions and recommendations stated in the report.
  5. The report will be sent to the organisation referrer and the employee will receive a copy if requested.
  6. Treatment recommendations may be highlighted in the report. These will be charged at an additional cost. Treatment options may include face to face counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or focussed return-to-work support. These can be organised and managed by the AXA ICAS Consultant.
  7. The AXA ICAS Consultant will liase with the organisational referrer in order to assist implementation of the recommendations.
